We are a food sector development environment that combines laboratories, pilot equipment, and experts into a single entity. We offer companies and researchers a platform where new food products, processes, and solutions can be developed and tested in practice before investing in industrial scale.

Managing the big picture in development

Renewing the food sector often requires solutions that work throughout the entire production chain. The SEAMK Food Labs pool of expertise combines knowledge ranging from primary production soil and cultivation technology to industrial processing and sensory evaluation of the final product.

This creates the conditions for understanding cause-and-effect relationships: in the research environment, it is possible to experimentally determine how raw material treatment in the field affects the quality or processability of the final food product. In this way, the functionality of the solution can be evaluated as a whole, instead of optimizing just a single phase.

Combining RDI and education into an expert organization

SEAMK Food Labs operates as both a research platform and a learning environment. Corporate development projects and student projects are carried out in the same facilities. The model offers companies the opportunity to commission studies and pilots flexibly, while students gain contact with genuine working life development needs.

The engine of the operation is a community of over 70 experts. This extensive pool of experts and active participation in national and international RDI networks ensure that SEAMK Food Labs has access to the most up-to-date information on the sector’s technological development and legislation. This knowledge is directly available for companies’ development work through various forms of cooperation.

This website has been produced as part of the Future Frami Food Lab development project.

Future Frami Food Lab is an ERDF-funded project. The main objective of the project is to increase the role of South Ostrobothnia as a food region and as a leading expert in food technology and processes in Finland and as an internationally significant actor. The project also strengthens SEAMK Food Labs’ role as a testing platform for food technologies and processes and as an identified competence cluster in the field.
